- Settlers arrive in the village of Amari and massacre the people before taking a young girl named amari and marching her to a port with many others from her village to be shipped over the atlantic to the new world of America.
- Amari reaches a slave shipping port and befriends a slave named Afi after which is shipped with Amari on a journey called the middle passage.
- Amari arrives at a slave in the new world and is sold to a plantation owner named Mr. Derby.
- An indentured servant named Polly is introduced and has a downward look on Amari for a portion of the time being. After they find that they shall be living together they become best friends.
- The indentured servant, Polly and the slave Amari which has been given a new degrading name "Myna" are introduced to a small elderly women named Teenie and her son Tidbit.
- An elderly slave named Cato gives the two girls advice on how instead of going north to freedom there is a place farther south where their freedom is assured.
- Mrs. Derby mothers a child that in a great surprise belongs to her personal slave named Noah.
- Mr. Derby Murders Noah on the Front lawn of the estate with a musket shot point blank in the chest before reloading and silencing the baby that belonged to Noah and Mrs. Derby.
- Mr. Derby makes the decision to sell Polly's indenturement to a whore house in New Orleans while at the same time selling Amari off at a slave auction that is along the way. Mr. Derby decides to have a doctor take Polly and Amari to be sold off, little does Derby know that the doctor has full intention of helping them.
- Mr. Derby seperates Tidbit from his mother, Teenie, and is loaded into the doctor's carriage before being sent off and set free by the doctor who finds slavery inhumane. The three then start the dangerous journey south to find the so called Fort Mose.
