Middle Passage
The Middle Passage was the triangular trade system that brought Africans to North and South America from places such as Sierra Leone. The passage would last roughly 90 days and this was a real torture on the slaves during the long trip. The Conditions for the trip were absolutely awful. First of all the men, who were stowed in the cargo area in makeshift beds of wooden planks that gave them no more than 2 inches of space from the slave next to them and no more than 4 inches of space from the slave above them. The slaves were not given any sanitation facilities for them to use so the worst of it all was how they were forced to deficate all over one another and then to vomit on each other due to the smell.
The women were at least brought up on deck most of the time. The women were tied to the side of the ship and were beaten if not quiet. One of the hardest things for the female slaves was how the sailors and crew took advantage of them by force involving rape. the perilous journey drove some of the tortured slaves to dive overboard and drown themselves in the ocean.
